Yes, We Need Romantic Orientation Labels and No, That Isn’t Everyone
Is it the romantic orientation label itself that upsets you, or that you’re not the one who gets to label other people now?
I’m a firm believer in “may pointless Internet arguments and notification pollution from Internet manbabies continue to make me money”.
What spurred my apparently long-awaited return to Medium? I was on Reddit a little while ago discussing how tiring it is that aromanticism and asexuality get confused as being the same thing. Like clockwork, in came this age-old interjection:
“It just sounds like you don’t like dating or being in a relationship. Why do you need a label for that? These labels are just a stupid trend, you all just want to feel like you’re special.”
Lacking the desire and mental energy to further engage someone who’s clearly not going to be persuaded anyway, I just hit the downvote button and went on with my evening.
Whether you like it or not, what we see online reflects real life to an extent.
